UTAH NAVAJO HEALTH SYSTEM

UTAH Navajo Health System

Serving Navajo communities in Utah's Southern San Juan County:
The Utah Navajo Health System (UNHS) operates four health centers across the Utah Strip of the Navajo Nation, focusing on the well-being of American Indian/Alaska Native populations (79% of our patients).
Addressing unique challenges of Rural Communities:
Our service area falls within a federally designated frontier zone, presenting unique socioeconomic challenges. Nearly half (49%) lack basic utilities and phone access, and with 43% unemployment and an average income less than half the state and national averages, 78% of our population lives below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.
Committed to accessible, comprehensive care:
As a not-for-profit Community Health Center, UNHS champions equitable access to healthcare. We provide essential medical, dental, and behavioral health services to men, women, and children, regardless of citizenship, nationality, or financial ability.
Here's how we make a difference:
  • Primary care for all: We offer routine and preventive care, chronic disease management, and urgent care services.
  • Beyond physical health: We address mental health and well-being through counseling, substance abuse treatment, and more.
  • Breaking down barriers: We navigate language barriers and provide culturally sensitive care to ensure everyone feels welcome and understood.
Here's how we make a difference:
At UNHS, we believe everyone deserves quality healthcare, no matter their background or circumstances. By addressing health disparities and promoting holistic well-being, we hope to build a healthier, brighter future for our community.

Utah Navajo Health System: Walking in Beauty with Mental Wellness Training/Community Education

Empowering Communities with ASSIST:
Our ASSIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) program equips individuals with the knowledge and confidence to identify and support individuals at risk for suicide. Through interactive workshops, participants learn valuable skills like:

  • Identifying warning signs: Recognizing changes in behavior, mood, or speech that may indicate suicidal thoughts.
  • Safely engaging with individuals: Approaching conversations with empathy and respect, creating a safe space for open communication.
  • Connecting to resources: Providing information and referrals to mental health services and support networks.

ZERO Suicides: A Vision for Hope:
UNHS is proud to partner with the ZERO Suicide initiative, aiming to eliminate suicide in the Navajo Nation. This collaborative effort focuses on:

  • Raising awareness: Engaging in community outreach and education campaigns to break down stigmas surrounding mental health and suicide.
  • Strengthening support systems: Building networks of trained individuals ready to offer support and resources to those in need.
  • Creating a safe and inclusive environment: Promoting inclusivity and fostering a sense of belonging within communities.

We believe that by empowering individuals with skills and knowledge, building strong support systems, and fostering a culture of hope, we can create a future where suicide is no longer a reality in the Navajo Nation.

Take Action:

  • Join an ASSIST workshop: Learn how to identify and support individuals at risk for suicide.
  • Become a ZERO Suicide champion: Advocate for suicide prevention in your community.
  • Reach out for help: If you or someone you know is struggling, contact the UNHS crisis hotline at 1-800-483-5240 or visit your local clinic or hospital.
