What to Expect

The Diné inspired design reflects and pays homage to cultural traditions while offering a safe and secure place to obtain services. Programs and services include basics like essentials care packages of:

and in some cases, cell phones to communicate with Crime Victim Advocates, and medical providers, and access to UNHS Behavioral Health staff for support.

  • Safe, private location

  • Free Shelter and other services

  • Transportation provided to shelter

  • Support, information, and parenting resources to ensure children’s safety

  • Self-provided childcare (available during some GIS activities)

  • Confidential services

  • Food, clothing, and toiletries provided as needed

  • Shared common areas and shared bedrooms if necessary.

  • Laundry facilities provided (sheets, towels, and blankets provided)

  • No visitors in the shelter, but you can meet loved ones elsewhere
  • During your stay at GIS, you will have daily access to advocates who will make every effort to assist you in developing goals and plans to secure long term shelter/housing and provide transportation to get you there.
  • Duration of stay at the shelter varies.
  • Advocates are available in-person weekdays and by phone on weekends.
